A DECADE OF DEVASTATING DECLINE FOR FAMOUS NAMES

-

C&A, Borders, Comet and BHS are just a few of the other high street giants that have disappeared over the past decade. And a bleak Christmas could push others over the edge, with booming sales vital to ward off grim news in 2019.

Last week, Carpetright reported heavy half-year losses after closing 65 stores as part of a rescue plan. Debenhams are closing up to 50 stores after record annual losses.

“It’s difficult to know how Christmas sales will go but there are retailers who will find next year very challenging,” said Professor Sparks.

“The massive advertising from Amazon, will see a lot more people turn to online and that will add to the problems.”
