The Sunday Post (Inverness)

Sad passing of a true golfing great

-

The Sunday Post paid tribute after the passing of golfing legend Robert Tyre Jones on December 19, 1971.

The American, who bought and founded the golf course at Augusta, Georgia, is credited with starting the Masters Tournament, first played in March 1934 and for setting many golf tournament standards, such as using coloured scoreboards.

In 1958, he was named a Freeman of the City of St Andrews, and was also known for his sportsmanship. He once lost a tournament when he reported himself for accidentally touching the ball with his club before a shot. When he was praised for his actions, he said: “You might as well praise me for not robbing banks.”
