Maxwell calls for respect towards

- By Danny Stewart sport@sundaypost.com

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell last night made an impassioned appeal for referees to be shown respect – as one of his predecessors, Gordon Smith, warned of the danger of a repeat of the 2010 strike. Maxwell spoke out in the wake of the news John Beaton had been forced to contact police about “threatening messages” he has received since taking charge of last Saturday’s Old Firm derby.

Beaton’s failure to take action against Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos in the game has been the subject of intense scrutiny. The Colombian was cited by the SFA for three incidents – for appearing to aim a kick at Scott Brown, stamping Tony Ralston on the back with his studs and making a grab at Ryan Christie’s groin.

However, it was ruled that because the match referee had confirmed that he had seen all three, no retrospective action could be taken.

That was a decision which prompted Celtic to issue a statement on Friday, voicing their “surprise”, and calling for Beaton to publicly explain his action.

In addition, the champions said they were seeking a meeting with the SFA chief executive, and the head of refereeing, John Fleming.

Maxwell yesterday confirmed a planned meeting with all shareholders on the subject of officiating would take place in due course, but in the meantime urged the Scottish football public to give referees a break.

“It is with deep dismay that, in the last 24 hours, we learned of one of our match officials having had threats made against him and his family,” he said.

“We are in close contact with those involved, and with Police Scotland, to ensure they are safe and that those responsible are identified and held accountable.

“This is not the first time in recent weeks that our match officials have been targeted.

“Another referee was allegedly threatened and assaulted at a lower-league game prior to Christmas.

“These incidents are isolated
