Blues through, but Terriers woes continue
Holders Chelsea are safely through to the fourth round, but Premier League strugglers Huddersfield bit the dust, Southampton were forced into a replay, while Everton and Crystal Palace scraped home by the skin of their teeth against lower league rivals.
Josh Brownhill scored Bristol City’s goal that condemned Huddersfield, the top-flight’s bottom club, to a 1-0 defeat and a ninth consecutive loss. There was no such drama for Chelsea against Nottingham Forest, despite Cesc Fabregas missing a penalty on potentially his farewell appearance at Stamford Bridge.
Alvaro Morata broke the deadlock early in the second half and doubled the lead on the hour to secure a 2-0 win.
Southampton were 2-0 up away at Derby, thanks to Nathan Redmond’s double, but two goals in three minutes from Jack Marriott and Tom Lawrence handed the Rams a second crack at the Saints.
Crystal Palace enjoyed a man advantage over League Two Grimsby after just two minutes, following Andrew Fox’s early red card, but it took them 84 minutes to finally break down the Mariners’ gritty defensive resolve, with Jordan Ayew eventually saving their blushes.
Ademola Lookman and Bernard fired Everton into a 2-0 lead over League Two leaders Lincoln inside 14 minutes, but Michael Bostwick halved the deficit just before the half-hour mark, and it needed a late goalline clearance from leading scorer Richarlison to deny the Imps a replay at Sincil Bank.
Joe Willock became the first teenager to score an FA Cup goal for Arsenal since Aaron Ramsey in January 2010 and added a second to give his side a 2-0 halftime lead at Blackpool.
Alex Iwobi added a third 10 minutes from the end to wrap up a 3-0 win.
Bournemouth’s defensive problems continued as they lost 3-1 at home to Brighton, with Anthony Knockaert, Yves Bissouma and Florin Andone on target, with Marc Pugh replying.
That makes it 15 goals conceded now in just four games for the Cherries.
West Ham saw off Birmingham 2-0, but early goalscorer Marko Arnautovic reacted angrily to being substituted after just 20 minutes. His replacement, Andy Carroll, added a late second.
Burnley squeezed past Championship high-fliers Barnsley 1-0 thanks to a last-gasp penalty from Chris Wood.
