Irate Lambert to wield axe after Accy loss

-

MANAGER Paul Lambert blasted his side after Ipswich bowed out following a 1-0 defeat at League One Accrington.

Billy Kee struck the winner in the 76th minute as the Championship strugglers were eliminated at this stage of the competition for a ninth successive year.

Lambert said: “It’s not good enough. It’s a disgrace what has happened here to a big club. The club is in a bad patch, it is not a bed of roses, and I won’t put up with it and will make changes in the transfer window.

“We had chances, but we have got to defend the goal. I understand the fans’ frustrations and we deserve to be criticised.”

Stanley boss John Coleman was delighted as his side sealed a fourthround spot thanks to Kee’s ninth goal of the season.

Sean Mcconville’s free-kick found Ben Richards-everton at the far post and he put the ball back across goal with Kee there to head home.

Coleman said: “It was excellent from us in the first half, we took the game to them and made chances, but didn’t take them.

“In the second half, they took the game to us, but we got the goal. It was a full-bloodied game and both tried to play attractive football.”

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock criticised the slow response of Gillingham’s medical team after his side crashed out at Priestfield, with Elliott List providing the killer blow after 81 minutes.

The Bluebirds’ shock 1-0 loss to the League One Gills was compounded by second-half injuries to Kadeem Harris and Danny Ward.

Harris received lengthy treatment on the pitch for a shoulder problem, with Warnock unhappy at the amount of time it took for a stretcher to be brought on.

“I think if you’re a medical person and you are wanting a stretcher, you’d be there quicker. If he’d had a heart attack, he’d be dead now,” said Warnock. “I think they’ve got a lot to learn.

“Whatever division you’re in, you are concerned about your players if they don’t get the right treatment and we were waiting for a stretcher for I don’t know how long, but that’s life.” Swansea-born Lovell described the victory as the best of his managerial career. He said: “Obviously I haven’t played against many Premiership teams before so it’s got to be the best, hasn’t it?

“It’s a great result.”
