Bus driver dies and three still in hospital

Abusdriver­hasdiedaft­er his vehicle crashed into a bridge in the Highlands and landed on its side.

The incident occurred on the B9161 at the Littlemill Bridge south-east of Munlochy shortly before 5.45pm on Friday.

Five fire crews, police and paramedics were called to the scene.

There were nine passengers on the 37-seater bus service which was travelling from Inverness to Cromarty when the incident happened.

Police have confirmed that the driver of the bus, a 50-year-old man, sustained fatal injuries.

One casualty was cut free from the vehicle, three others remain in a serious but stable condition, with the other passengers sustaining minor injuries. The road was blocked in both directions as emergency services helped those involved.

Sergeant Alan Henderson, of the road policing unit, Highlands and Islands division, said: “Our thoughts at this time are with those involved and their families.

“An investigat­ion into the collision is under way and we have already spoken to a number of witnesses.

“In order to help establish the cause of the collision, I would urge anyone who saw the vehicle prior to the collision who has not already come forward, to do so.”
