Spicy tomatoes could soon be on supermarket shelves thanks to new genome editing technology.

Scientists in Brazil and Ireland are aiming to add the kick of chilli peppers to the humble salad filler by “switching on” the inactive capsaicinoid gene.

But the true question still remains – will it be a fruit or a vegetable?
