Referees’ arrogance affects lives

Jags boss’ stinging criticism of officials

Former Scotland defender Gary Caldwell added fuel to the fire of Scotland’s refereeing crisis last night by branding officials “arrogant”.

The Partick Thistle manager was furious after Andrew Dallas sent off midfielder Gary Harkins for two bookable offences in his side’s draw with Falkirk.

Caldwell said: “Every week there are bad decisions in every game we play in.

“I’m not saying they can be perfect, but I think the way they go about it afterwards – the arrogance they show – isn’t great.

“It needs to improve. We need to make it better because this is people’s lives at stake in these games.” Last weekend SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell called for everyone in the game to respect match officials. His comments came after referee John Beaton had to call in police after receiving threats following his handling of last month’s Old Firm clash.

Three incidents involving Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos were referred to the Compliance Officer, but none were taken any further after Beaton insisted he hadn’t missed any of the incidents during the game.
