FROZEN IN TIME

-

Dundee is rife with rumours about the city’s two clubs heading for amalgamation, reminiscent of Wallace Mercer’s plan to unite Hearts and Hibs nearly 29 years ago. But there was a time when the capital’s giants did play as one at the start of every season. An Edinburgh Select took on top English sides of the time – such as Newcastle United, Wolves and Burnley – with the prime intention of raising money for charity. These games alternated between Tynecastle and Easter Road and ran from 1944 until 1962. One of the last saw Chelsea arrive in Gorgie on August 6, 1960, and the sides hit nine goals in front of 25,000. On the mark for Edinburgh were George Thomson with two penalties, Joe Baker John Baxter and Bobby Johnstone. Chelsea’s goals came from Peter Sillet, Livesey, Blunstone and one Jimmy Greaves Esq.
