A campaigning MSP has secured a

£1 million pledge from Glasgow Airport to professionally soundproof hundreds of Clydebank homes which sit under a flight path.

Gil Paterson, SNP MSP for Clydebank and Milngavie, has also persuaded the local council to commit a further £160,000 to a pilot project in the Whitecrook area. The MSP, who has led an 11-year campaign on the noise pollution issue, said: “With Glasgow Airport already committing £1 million, it’s a big plus that West Dunbartonshire Council have also taken this issue so seriously – committing to a pilot of 10 houses, which I would guess would be in the region of £160,000.”

The airport said: “Glasgow Airport has made a commitment to introduce a noise insulation programme which will benefit a number of properties in the Whitecrook area.”

Jonathan Mccoll, West Dunbartonshire Council leader, said: “I welcome the work Gil Paterson MSP is doing to bring the council, the airport and the community together to find a solution to this long-standing problem.” Meanwhile, Tracy Black, director of CBI Scotland, says further delays to funding a rail link to the airport will constrain the transport hub’s economic impact.

She said: “A direct rail link has the potential to widen the already significant economic contribution Glasgow Airport makes to the local area and give a strong first impression of Scotland to overseas visitors and investors.”
