Boro fight back to earn win at the Hawthorns

- By Matt Mcgeehan sport@sundaypost.com

Middlesbrough striker Britt Assombalonga earned manager Tony Pulis a dramatic 3-2 win on his return to West Brom with a late double at The Hawthorns. Assombalonga drew Boro level with a 75th-minute equaliser – 10 minutes after being sent on by Pulis – before grabbing the winner seven minutes from time. George Saville gave Middlesbrough a 17th-minute lead, but Jay Rodriguez grabbed a 42nd-minute equaliser. Albion took the lead through Dwight Gayle before Assombalonga’s late double.

A goal from Leon Clarke on his return to Wigan was enough to give his side all three points thanks to a 2-1 victory over QPR at the DW Stadium.

Clarke put Wigan 2-0 up in the 55th minute, after Josh Windass had fired them ahead early on. Bright Samuel pulled one back with a deflected strike from distance, but it wasn’t enough.

Blackburn were stunned at Griffin Park as Brentford came from two goals down to end Rovers’ four-game winning run in a 5-2 rout.

Goals from top scorer Neal Maupay, Said Benrahma, Sergi Canos and an Ollie Watkins brace capped an impressive turnaround after early strikes from Rovers’ Bradley Dack and Danny Graham.

Second-half goals from David Mcgoldrick and Billy Sharp gave promotion-chasing Sheffield United a 2-0 victory over Bolton.

Sam Vokes missed a penalty on his Stoke debut as Hull claimed a 2-0 victory at the KCOM Stadium. Vokes, who signed from Burnley on transfer deadline day, had an afternoon to forget as his firsthalf spot-kick was saved by David Marshall. Jarrod Bowen had given Hull the lead 60 seconds earlier with a well-directed free-kick. Kamil Grosicki’s poked finish in the second half ensured a home win.

Lucas Joao struck late on as Steve Bruce’s reign in charge of Sheffield Wednesday started with a 1-0 win over bottom-placed Ipswich at Portman Road.

Rotherham picked up their first away point since the start of December as they held Millwall to a goalless draw at the Den.

Aston Villa’s play-off hopes suffered a setback when they were held to a scrappy goalless draw at struggling Reading.

Birmingham recorded only their second win in eight games as Jota and Che Adams found the target to be Nottingham Forest 2-0 at St Andrew’s. Andreas Weimann scored one goal and made another as Bristol City surged into the play-off places with a 2-0 win over Swansea at Ashton Gate. Weimann headed the hosts in front seconds after the interval, and it was his clever through-ball that allowed Callum O’dowda to make the points safe in the 74th minute with a cool low finish.
