Sickened, but Mcintyre happy with new boys

- By Brian Fowlie sport@sundaypost.com

Dundee boss Jim Mcintyre was left frustrated by his Swiss keeper’s tendency to go for a wander at Hamilton. Seny Dieng came off his line to try to clear the ball during added-on time of the clash with Accies.

His sliced clearance gave possession back to the opposition and led to Darian Mackinnon smashing in a dramatic late equaliser.

Mcintyre will clearly be having a word with the on-loan QPR stopper.

He said: “The big thing for me is that if you come out of your box, you make sure you deal with the ball. He didn’t do that.

“He’s been excellent for us since he’s come to the club.

“In this game he had a couple of excellent stops and took some really good crosses.

“But if you choose to come out for the ball you have to make sure you clear it.

“We had a defender in a good position to deal with it and, in that case, I think you should just hold your position.”

Mcintyre, however, felt the goalie’s team-mates also contributed to Dundee squandering a lead.

He went on: “Whenever you concede that late, it’s a real sickener.

“We got too deep in the last 15 or 20 minutes. “We didn’t keep the ball well enough to get it up the park, where there were opportunities to hit them on the counter. When you keep giving the ball back, it affords the other team chances and Darian stuck the ball away with great aplomb. “We’re disappointed because we were in a good position and these head-to-heads are so important.

“But I’m really pleased with a lot of our new players, we’ve picked up another point and we’ve not lost any ground on Hamilton.

“There’s things to be pleased about but not winning after being in such a great position is a sore one.” Dundee gave starts to five of the players Mcintyre recruited during the transfer window – Scott Wright, Ryan Mcgowan, Ethan Robson, Andreas Hadenus and James Horsfield.

There were six changes from the side that was knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Queen of the South last Tuesday. Mcintyre was pleased with his fresh faces, particularly goalscorer Scott Wright.

He said: “I thought it was a really good finish from Scott.

“We got to grips with things after about 20 minutes and I thought he was pivotal in that. “Gary Woods then made two unbelievable saves, particularly the one from Martin Woods. “Over the next couple of weeks the new lads will get up to speed and get to know what’s required.”
