Son strikes late to thrill Spurs boss Pochettino

-

Mauricio Pochettino felt his Tottenham side were worthy of their late winner against Newcastle.

Son Heung-min struck with seven minutes left to secure a hard-fought 1-0 success for Spurs, who moved up to second in the table.

“I think we fully deserved the victory,” he said. “We dominated the game, we had the control. We were very patient. “It was another massive effort from the squad and the team, I am more than happy, more than pleased. It is a fantastic result for us.” Neil Warnock felt missing striker Emiliano Sala “was with us” after Cardiff boosted their bid tobeat relegation withan emotional 2-0 victory over Bournemouth, with Bobby Reid scoring twice.

Warnock was tearful at the final whistle of Cardiff’s first home game since record signing Sala and pilot David Ibbotson went missing after the plane carrying them over the English Channel disappeared on January 21.

“I was all right until the final whistle and when I went on the pitch,” Warnock said. “I can’t begin to explain how difficult it’s been. The fans were just amazing.” Gonzalo Higuain and Eden Hazard each scored twice as Chelsea claimed a 5-0 victory over Huddersfield to ease the pressure on head coach Maurizio Sarri. David Luiz added one late on as they bounced back in style from their Bournemouth humbling. Goals from Ruben Neves (penalty), Raul Jimenez and Leander Dendoncker saw Wolves to an impressive 3-1 win at Everton, for whom Andre Gomes replied. “It was a good game and a good performance,” said Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Ashley Barnes’ lastgasp penalty – Burnley’s first in 68 top-flight matches – helped the Clarets snatch a 1-1 draw against Southampton. Nathan Redmond’s fantastic finish from distance just before the hour mark looked to have earned Saints a priceless three points.

But Saints defender Jack Stephens was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area in the third minute of time added-on and Barnes – who had a very strong spot-kick appeal turned down in the first half – made no mistake. Dyche said: “It would have been a travesty if we didn’t at least get a point.” Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster produced an inspired display as Brighton’s winless run stretched to five league games with a 0-0 draw at the Amex Stadium. The former England international twice kept out headers from Jurgen Locadia and also saved from Shane Duffy and Florin Andone to earn his side a point. Fulham’s hopes of Premier League survival suffered a fresh setback when they lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with goals from Luka Milivojevic and Jeffrey Schlupp.
