Ayr United boss Ian Mccall could not conceal his frustration after his side missed the chance to return to the top of the table following a Cappielow stalemate.

The Somerset gaffer said: “Ross Doohan has not had a save to make whereas we created three or four decent chances that Robby Mccrorie did well with.

“I don’t think they had a shot at goal.”

Mccall’s side, who had the opportunity to overtake Ross County on goal difference, had the better of the few chances that were created but on-loan Ranger Mccrorie put up the shutters to earn the Greenock men a point.

The Honest Men should have taken the lead on 18 minutes when a head-flick from Lawrence Shankland set Michael Moffat clear. However, he was denied by Mccrorie’s legs with the shotstopper then leaping to his left to stop Ross Docherty’s effort from the loose ball.

Morton’s best chance of the first half came on 35 minutes when Jack Iredale charged forward before sending in a fierce drive that just cleared the bar.

Right on half-time Shankland teed Moffat up for a second time when he rolled the ball across the six-yard box but Mccrorie was again equal to the striker’s shot.

The fans had to wait until 20 minutes from time for the first shot of the second half with the hosts’ Dylan Dykes fizzing a 20-yarder just over.

Ayr almost sneaked a winner three minutes from time when Craig Moore played the ball back to Shankland but the striker’s drive came back off a post. Morton boss Jonatan Johansson said: “I was happy with the performance. There was a really good work ethic and the shape was good.”

Of star performer Mccrorie, the Morton manager added: “Robbie is a really good goalie – that is why I brought him in. He is good enough to play at this level and above.”
