Lichties extend lead with Hamilton winner

-

airdrieonians 0 Brechin CITY 1 The visitors bagged a 16th-minute lead when a Grant Gallagher passback to his keeper David Hutton was short, allowing striker Andy Jackson the chance to intercept. While Hutton and defender Sean Crighton attempted to challenge, Jackson was able to force the ball into the net for the opening goal.

Airdrie peppered the Brechin goal on a number of occasions. Josh Campbell had a couple shots pushed away by keeper Patrick O’neil, Sean Crighton had a netbound header well saved and Declan Glass had a terrific curling shot blocked by the Brechin goalie.

After the interval the visitors remained determined to hold on to their single goal advantage and they did just that thanks to their deep defensive tactics.

The Diamonds did have the ball in the net in 62 minutes, but Darryl Duffy was offside after following up Chris O’neil’s shot that struck the crossbar.

Ryan Conroy’s last-minute 30-yard strike that rattled the crossbar was indicative of the match as it had looked net-bound, but the visitors finished with all three points.

Montrose 2 Forfar athletic 0 Forfar went close in 12 minutes when Dale Hilson smashed a shot off the angle of post and bar.

Montrose grabbed the lead in 21 minutes. The visitors gave the ball away, allowing the hosts to hit on the break and Jamie Redman played in Craig Johnston to slot home.

The Loons hit back and, in 40 minutes, John Baird just failed to hit the target with a header.

In 69 minutes, Tom Reilly of Forfar was booked along with Graham Webster after a flare-up. From the resulting free-kick to Montrose, Euan Henderson got in a shot which was saved by Marc Mccallum.

In 75 minutes, Mccallum saved a fierce drive from Webster.

Montrose clinched the points in 88 minutes. Baird brought down Henderson and Martin Rennie scored from the spot.

A minute into stoppage-time, Reilly picked up a second yellow card for an off-the-ball-incident.

Montrose looked for more and Henderson had a shot deflected wide. From the corner, Rennie had a close range header saved by Mccallum.
