Gerrard uses Pool connection once again

Steven Gerrard has recruited former Liverpool physio Matt Konopinski to join his backroom staff at Ibrox.

Konopinski has left a job at the FA to join Rangers.

Others who came north from Anfield are assistant boss Gary Mcallister, coach Michael Beale and head of performance, Jordan Milson.

Meanwhile, one of Rangers summer signings, Jake Hastie, was on the mark yesterday.

The former Motherwell midfielder was sent out on loan to Rotherham United on deadline day, and made an immediate impact with a goal with a well- taken free- kick in the South Yorkshire derby against Doncaster Rovers. Unfortunately for him and his teammates, the hosts fought back to win 2-1.

One of the stars of Scotland’s ill-fated Women’s World Cup Finals adventure in France in the summer was the toast of the sky-blue half of Manchester last night.

Caroline Wallace, playing for City, scored the only goal of the first- ever women’s derby with United in front of 31,213 at the Etihad.

The kick- off in France’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Albania in Paris was delayed last night – after the wrong national anthem was played.

Albania’s players looked distinctly unimpressed, some exchanging puzzled looks, as an unfamiliar tune – the Andorran anthem according to the UEFA website – greeted them as they linked arms ahead of the match at the Stade de France.

The visiting fans showed their displeasure as they whistled from the stands.

After the playing of France’s La Marseillaise, the Albania players refused to line up for the match, demanding the correct anthem be played before they would do so.

Eventually it was, although not before further embarrassment as, according to L’equipe, the stadium announcer promised “the Armenian anthem” would be played.

France’s next match on Tuesday is at home to Andorra.
