- By Craig Mcdonald cmcdonald@sundaypost.com Police: Superstar Rod said he was sorry after fracas at resort

Si nger Rod Stewar t apologised after allegedly punching a hotel security guard in the chest, according to police reports.

The Scots star, 74, faces a court appearance after being accused of punching the guard in a fracas also involving his son. Sean Stewart, 39, is said to have shoved the worker in the incident which happened on New Year’s Eve. The employee working at Breakers Resort, in Palm Beach, Florida, complained that Rod followed up and struck him in his “left ribcage area”.

The police account states it began after Rod, Sean and their group, which included children, tried to enter a private event at the resort.

The report said: “The group began to get loud and cause a scene and refused to follow instructions to leave.”

Security guard Jessie Dixon, 33, alleges Sean got “about nose- to- nose” from his face and

“shoved him backward”. Sir Rod then “stepped toward and struck Dixon’s chest with a closed fist”.

One of the officers wrote in his arrest report: “I made contact with Roderick Stewart who stated he and his family approached the check-in table and attempted to have the children in their group gain access.

“R. Stewart stated that after being denied access the guard became argumentative with his family which in turn caused them to become agitated.”

The police report adds that Rod “apologised for his behaviour in the incident”.

Video of the incident at the Florida resort is said to exist and police have also obtained witness statements including those from hotel employees.

A source close to the singing star told US media: “It was an unfortunate quick, brief misunderstanding and they apologised. No one was detained and there were no injuries.” The charge is described as simple battery and adds it refers to a “touch or strike”.

He now faces an appearance at Palm Beach County criminal justice complex in Florida on February 5
