Dundee’s new stadium project has been a topic of discussion for years.

But Dark Blues owner Tim Keyes last night vowed 2020 will be the year plans finally come to fruition.

An ambitious proposal for Dundee’s departure from its traditional home of Dens Park was first revealed in 2017. Since then, a series of planning and financial stumbling blocks have prevented real progress being made. Just five months ago, Dee managing director John Nelms spoke of his frustration over difficulties in securing funding.

However, in a message co- signed by Keyes and Nelms in the match programme for yesterday’s visit of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, the club reaffirmed its commitment to the project, which it intends to push forward with this year.

“Over the years since we have been entrusted with the football club, the amount of improvements to the infrastructure of the club and facilities has been staggering,” said the pair.

“But the slow, steady growth puts us in a far better sustainable position as a club and a company for it.

“This is the benefit of stability, and that is what we promised nearly seven years ago.

“Now, our enduring commitment takes us into a new decade.

“As such, 2020 will see the application being submitted for the new stadium complex near Camperdown Park.

“Most of the obstacles that were set before us have been sorted, and it is time to kick on and get this thing built.” The new stadium is earmarked for land purchased by Keyes and Nelms in 2016, just off the A90 Kingsway trunk road, by Camperdown Park.

In i t i a l plans also contained a new training ground, a hotel and a crematorium, aimed at driving income for the club on non-matchdays.
