1949-50 – third lanark 2, rangers 2

-

Rangers fans got used to Andy Goram being central to title wins during the 1990s. But it was his father, Lewis

– also a keeper – who was in the spotlight when the Ibrox club were crowned champions in 1950.

They were battling at the top of the table with Hibs. It was the Iron Curtain against the Famous Five.

The sides drew 0-0 in front of 101,000 fans at Ibrox in the secondlast game of the campaign.

So Rangers needed at least a point against Third Lanark at Cathkin to finish top of the pile, the Edinburgh men having completed their fixtures. The Light Blues were 2-0 up after 20 minutes and coasting. Their first goal, however, was recorded as being extremely controversial as Lewis Goram was off the ground, catching a cross, when Billy Williamson bundled man and ball over the line. Rangers, however, then proceeded to almost throw the title away. They conceded two goals and, much to their relief, watched George Henderson miss a penalty.

The home side kept threatening, despite being without the injured Harry Mooney for 15 minutes. He spent the last few minutes on the left wing, nursing a broken arm. Rangers’ defenders stood firm, hung on for a draw, and clinched their 27th championship.
