MARCH 5, 1953 Joseph Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union, died aged 74 after a stroke.

Despite institutin­g a reign of terror over more than two decades while modernisin­g Russia, the dictator was given a state funeral with four days of national mourning declared. Stalin’s body was subsequent­ly embalmed and interred in Lenin’s Mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square until 1961.
