1969 FROZEN IN TIME

-

Today, Livingston and St Johnstone square up for the Betfred League Cup Final at Hampden.

The West Lothian side will be aiming to once more lift the Cup they secured in 2004, when they defeated Hibs in the final.

It was in the very same competition 52 years ago that the Perth Saints reached their first major final.

However, they will be hopeful of a more-successful outcome this time, as they went down 1-0 to Celtic in front of a crowd of 73,000, courtesy of a Bertie Auld goal that October afternoon.

That meant that the Hoops had successfully won the competition for the fifth time-in-a-row.

But what was somewhat unusual was that it was the second time that year that Jock Steins’s men had hoisted the trophy.

For six months earlier they had routed Hibs 6-2, Bobby Lennox the star man grabbing a hat-trick.
