Singer: No sir, I can’t boogie to cover

-

The original singer of Yes Sir, I Can Boogie has criticised a cover version by Scots group The Fratellis as not her “cup of tea”.

Spanish duo Baccara sold 18 million copies of the disco classic following its 1977 release.

The song received an unexpected lease of life last November when footage emerged of the Scotland football team’s dressing-room rendition of the song as they celebrated qualification for the European Championships.

The Fratellis are to release a cover of the song ahead of Scotland’s games at the finals this summer.

However, the version has been described by one of the original artists as resembling the style of big band leader James Last.

Singer Maria Mendiola, 69, said: “I’m sorry, but my honest opinion is it is not my cup of tea. I do not like it. Yes Sir, I Can Boogie – it’s a song I have performed thousands of times. It has a very special feeling for me and it’s gone, it’s gone.

“It is not disco style at all. It sounds more like the James Last band.

“The Fratellis are fantastic. The band is very good. But what I didn’t like is the version.”

Fratellis lead singer and guitarist, Jon Fratelli, said they recorded it because they thought it might be “a funny song to do”.
