Looks like Lady’s day for Brian

- By Reg Moore sport@sundaypost.com

Market Rasen’s opener may offer Donald Mccain’s Lady Tremaine a winning opening in their two-mile maiden hurdle.

The mare will have to run to about 115 to win it. But she is lightly-raced and came within a neck of winning at Newcastle last time.

That was behind Robin Des Theatre at today’s trip, and prevailing better ground could see Brian Hughes ride a precious winner. Fitzroy should be hard to beat in the maiden hurdle, over two-and-a -half miles, after a solid Taunton second last time.

But it was his third to Fergal O’brien’s Polish at Ludlow last February, the winner now rated 137, which best underlines his chance.

Alan King’s Royal Pretender looks the main danger. But he was a bit disappointing in a Ludlow handicap when a distant sixth of eight. Ernesto was a Group horse in Germany on the flat but he has taken time to warm to hurdles for trainer Ian Williams. But his recent second to On To Victory at Warwick suggests that his introductory period is complete and his turn may be now.
