Sheerin insists Glass is getting ‘a brilliant group’

Paul Sheerin believes the Aberdeen squad being inherited by Stephen Glass is one he’ll be happy with. Despite the Dons making heavy weather of knocking League One Dumbarton out of the Scottish Cup, the caretaker manager claimed there is plenty to impress the new man. He said: “I’d say so. They are a brilliant group of players.

“They have just struggled a little bit in that final third in recent weeks.

“We’ve got through this one. We’ve managed to get a goal so I’m sure he’ll be happy with the squad he’s inheriting.

“We spoke about staying patient before the game, but obviously with the position we’re in and the lack of goals in recent weeks, the longer that goes on the more desperate you become. “I thought in the second half we became more desperate than needed to be, throwing things in and allowing them to defend their box, which they did brilliantly. “Dumbarton made things difficult for us but when you look at the number of chances we had, it was inevitable it was going to come at some stage.” Stephen Glass arrived in Scotland on Friday night and is now spending 10 days in quarantine following his departure from Atlanta United.

Sheerin added: “The likelihood is he will miss Saturday’s game against St Johnstone, then be into the club and looking to hit the ground running. “I spoke to him on Friday night and he has mostly left us to our own devices.

“He felt last year there were wee bits of interference when he was at Atlanta as interim manager.

“He feels it’s better just to let us get on with things.

“He will be desperate to get in and involved and we’ll continue to keep things going until he comes in.” Dumbarton manager Jim Duffy was proud of his players’ performance in the 1-0 defeat. Understandably, he questioned the wisdom of asking his men to face a Scottish Cup tie at the end of a week where they’d already played three league matches. He said: “It’s not fair. Would you ask that of top clubs? I absolutely doubt it.

“You wouldn’t have known it was our fourth game in seven days with what the players gave. “I think sometimes we are a bit disrespectful to part-time players because they have to go to their work, keep themselves fit, and play a succession of games. “I’ve got nothing but praise for my players. “I thought it was a fantastic, disciplined performance.”
