Gough wants thedoublemore than anything

- By Fraser Mackie SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Richard Gough believes the appetite for more silverware should override the desire to become an Invincible in the Rangers camp.

Steven Gerrard’s title-winners are five Premiership games away from completing an unbeaten season.

But the nine-in-a-row skipper insists the priority down the stretch must be securing Scottish Cup glory.

He expects Gerrard to bench some star men in league matches this month in order to ensure they’re at their best for knock-out games.

This weekend is the first of three in April devoted to playing catch-up with the delayed domestic competition.

If Rangers progress, they can reach the semi-finals for the first time under Gerrard by the end of the month.

Gers, who kick off their campaign today with a home tie against Cove Rangers, have league games at home to Hibernian and away to St Johnstone before clashing with Celtic on May 2.

Gough, a three-time Scottish Cup winner, insists completing the domestic double is a bigger deal than a historic unbeaten Premiership season.

He said: “I don’t think Steven Gerrard is going to be too worried about staying undefeated in the league.

“It would be a marvellous achievement – but there’s a Scottish Cup there to be won.

“So I think you’ll see the team changing in the next four or five league games, mixing it up a wee bit.

“Resting players, some important ones, for the later rounds of the cup.

“The league is done. Game over. We’ve won it.

“If Rangers remain undefeated, that would just be a record.

“But concentrating on the Scottish Cup – on winning another trophy to make sure we can get the double this season – would be fantastic.”
