Scots are facing Wooden Spoon

- By Stuart Bathgate SPORT@SUNDAYPOST.COM

Scotland coach Bryan Easson was a frustrated man last night after seeing his team overpowered by Italy in this Women’s Six Nations match at Scotstoun.

The home side had talked about getting off to a bright start, but instead they lost two early tries and were always chasing the game after that.

“Really disappointed,” Easson said after a defeat that means Scotland must beat Wales at home on Saturday to avoid the Wooden Spoon.

“The performance wasn’t good enough. We talked about coming out the traps for 20 minutes, and we were actually 12-0 down after a short space.

“That got us chasing the game. I thought we did well to get back to 12-10, but then to give away a soft try just before half-time then another one just after halftime really put us under pressure.

“When we got in the ascendancy we just tended to give the ball back far too easily – or missed silly tackles. So harsh lessons and harsh words at full-time. “We have to get better.” Italy scored seven tries in the end, including a hattrick for winger Manuela Furlan, while Scotland got two, through Lana Skeldon and Emma Wassell. Captain Helen Nelson converted both and added two penalties.

The Italians now meet Ireland in the third-place play-off. France, who beat the Irish 56-15 yesterday, play England in the final.
