I wouldn’t want world’s hardest job

£25 STAR LETTER

-

Your story about the babies being given the new drug was lovely. The advances that are being made are amazing and giving so many people hope they didn’t have before. It must be so hard to take the decisions on which drugs are approved for NHS patients and which ones aren’t. The line has to be drawn somewhere and how on earth can you judge if one person’s life can be transformed and another’s cannot? I’m glad I don’t have that kind of responsibility.

The young team

Everyone says you’re getting old when the policemen start looking younger but the Euros are making me feel like Methusalah. I’m in my 40s but some of the players look as if they should be playing for a boys’ club. If you’re good enough, you’re old enough but it seems hardly fair to have so much talent and youth. Bubble burst

It wasn’t funny at the time but your story about champagne sales soaring made me remember when my then boyfriend took me for a romantic picnic in the Campsie hills and put a bottle in a burn to chill while we sat enjoying the sun. It was a lovely day until he went to get it, slipped on the stones and broke his wrist in two places. I spent my birthday in casualty but, at least remembered to grab the bottle before we left. That was nearly 30 years and, of course, I remind my now husband of it whenever an opportunity arises. Carole Shaw, Edinburgh

No defence

It comes as no surprise to read the Ministry of Defence is not prepared to discuss the death of Anthony Bartlett. They either say nothing or mislead as can be seen in their treatment of Nuclear Test Veterans who are refused Legal Aid, denied the chance to state their case in court and are refused legal documents that would help them win justice. The Ministry of Defence are not to be trusted. David Whyte, Kirkcaldy

The oldest pub

I read a letter in Your View stating the oldest pub in Scotland was thought to be the Clachan Inn in Drymen.

I disagree as Edinburgh’s Sheep’s Heid was established in 1360! The Kings Wark in Leith is also older having been built in 1432. Linda Stuart, by email

Tragedy of heroes

I was so sorry to read that Bertie Auld is suffering dementia. I’m too young to have seen the Lisbon Lions but every Scottish football fan knows their names and what they achieved.

My father filled my head with their achievements and to see so many of that wonderful team laid low by this terrible disease is heartbreaking. They were a one-off and what they did is still astonishing.

Too many players of that generation are suffering like this and if heading the football has played a part then everybody must do everything we can to protect young players.
