UEFA reaction to Eriksen just left me cold

-

We were all horrified to see Christian Eriksen fighting for his life on the park in Copenhagen last Saturday evening after suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s game with Finland.

Thankfully, he pulled through and survived. Credit to the medical team, and his team-mates.

Since the horrifying incident, football has united and that’s been great to see.

The applause for him in the 10th minute of the Danes’ game against Belgium on Thursday was fitting and emotional.

But for all the positivity in the aftermath of it, I was far from impressed with how UEFA handled the situation.

They are in charge of the tournament, and we should see enormous leadership – in the right way – from them when testing times arrive.

However, they failed last Saturday.

To resume the game just two hours after Christian had been fighting for his life was totally wrong, and it didn’t sit well with me.

There is no way the Denmark players should have been made to play out the rest of the game.

It should have stopped there and then, and the result at the time, 0-0, should have stood.

Both countries should have been awarded a point apiece, and I don’t think anybody would have argued with that.

But UEFA wanted the game played to a finish – either that evening, or at lunchtime the following day – and that left me feeling cold.

I just shook my head in disbelief. However, as we all move on from UEFA’S poor call, the most-important thing is Christian is on the road to recovery, and it’s great to see him responding to the best wishes received from all over the world.

He is now out of hospital, and has been to the Danish training camp to visit the staff and his team-mates.

Everyone in the Dalglish household wishes Christian a full and speedy recovery.
