His Chancellor, Gordon Brown, a Scot, succeeded him. The PM’S decision to step down followed mounting casualties in the Iraq War and accusations that he had misled parliament, seeing his popularity plummet. Labour’s overall majority at the 2005 general election was reduced from 167 to 66 seats.
