TV sales send poor signal

-

Owning a colour television was still relatively rare in 1969, with just 100,000 in the UK. So this news story would have excited readers of The Post.

“Colour television sets could be cheaper. Sales now are in the doldrums. Up to £12 million-worth of unsold sets are threatening jobs in the industry. One manufacturer is to close a factory and lay off workers.

“There will be increasing pressure to make sets cheaper. Under the present rental system, the customer has to pay £65 (roughly £500 today).”

Sales did indeed boom and, as of 2019, there were 26.8 million TVS in the UK.
