Loch Ordie

A walk that follows many burns past lochs and ponds, skirts some impressive hills and is a splendid and simple hike through glorious country almost Highland in nature but close to the Central Belt. Loch Ordie is halfway on a loop that starts at a bend on the A923 Blairgowrie road on the left about four miles from Dunkeld, after the turn-off for Loch of the Lowes (near the sign and gateway to Cardney House) or signed from Butterstone. Deuchary Hill, the highest here at 509m, can be climbed on a non-circular path from the main circuit. This is one of the best, most scenic walks in Perthshire. Mostly level.

The Maspie Den

If you’re in Falkland for the palace or the tearoom, this amble up an enchanting glen is a must. Go through the village then signed Cricket Club for Falkland Estate and School – car park just inside gate (with map) – and further on to the Info Hub. Glen and refurbished path up the macadam road are obvious. Gushing burn, the “Temple of Decision”, waterfalls – you can even walk behind one! Then take to the hills.

Glen Canisp and the Inver River

An enchanting river and woodland walk, with a middle section up an easy hill. A four-mile “loop” in a broad sweep round the back of Lochinver. Best from north to south, starting on the bridge at the junction of the road to Baddidarach, on fisherman paths along the river, among trees with some Scots pine. Well maintained and signed, you ascend 75m to fine views with Suilven presiding, and back into the village via Glencanisp Lodge.

Loch Ard Walks

Pleasant Trossachs ambles through mixed forestry by Loch Ard and other lochans. Start around Milton on the B829 two miles west of Aberfoyle. Trailboards. Four walks marked, one a Sculpture Trail. Wildlife abounds. A good family outing.
