It will be close – and may end in penalties!

The Euros are now at that stage where there is no room for error.

We have the knock-out stages under way, and managers and players need to get it spot on or they will be on their way home.

There’s no doubt about the pick of the last-16 ties – England versus Germany at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

That is going to be tasty, and it is catching the imagination of everyone.

Of course, there is some major history involved with this fixture, and our friends from the south won the World Cup at Wembley in 1966 when they defeated West Germany.

But since then, England have suffered defeats to the Germans at the Italia 90 World Cup and at Euro 96, both on penalty shoot-outs.

However, for me, what happened 25 years ago – or 55 years ago – has absolutely no significance to what will take place this midweek.

There were signs that Joachim Low’s side are struggling for form as they battled to get out of Group F.

They had to show great determination to make sure they got the point they needed against Hungary in Munich.

But they also beat Portugal 4-2, so inconsistent is the best way to describe them so far.

They will look to replicate their display against Ronaldo & Co when they come up against Gareth Southgate’s men.

England will go into this game feeling confident, I would imagine.

They won Group D with a bit to spare. They got seven points from three games and didn’t concede a goal.

But they are capable of much better. There is more fluency required in their play, and they need to create more chances.

If they do, then I’m sure Harry Kane will get on the scoresheet against Germany.

With it being a home game for them, England will start as favourites, and that may well give them the edge as they look to progress to the last-eight.

But it will be very close – and might just go to penalties!
