What is prophylaxis?
Basically, it means prevention, it comes from the Greek word “phylax” which means to “guard”. Prophylactic treatment is used to prevent a disease. The current prophylactic treatment we are all talking about is the Covid-19 vaccine.
All vaccines are prophylaxis, as is birth control, cervical smears and malaria prevention measures for those who travel abroad.
Prophylactic antibiotics are used in surgery to prevent infection. We talk about primary prophylaxis in medicine whereby we are aiming to prevent a disease that hasn’t yet occurred. In the case of ischaemic heart disease, this would be checking blood pressure, treating a high cholesterol and tackling lifestyle issues, particularly where there is a family history of heart disease.
Secondary prophylaxis is used to prevent further problems when someone has had angina or a heart attack. It might include the use of aspirin or statins. Prophylaxis is extremely important.
