Wanted: A crew to fake life on Mars
In the film The Martian, astronaut Matt Damon is left behind on the red planet, and has to survive there for 18 months.
Now Nasa is looking to recruit four people to live for a year in its Dune Alpha Martian base.
But the good news is, rather than being stranded 237 million miles from Earth, the base will be built inside a building at Johnson Space Centre in Houston, Texas.
The project is part of the agency’s preparation for an eventual real-life Martian manned mission.
The paid volunteers will work a simulated Martian exploration mission complete with spacewalks, limited communications back home, restricted food and resources and equipment failures.
The application process opened on Friday and the requirements are
strict, including a master’s degree in a science, engineering or maths field or pilot experience.
“We want to understand how humans perform in them,” said lead scientist Grace Douglas.
