Thousands of Scots have taken part in the world’s biggest annual butterfly survey, which officially closes today.

The charity Butterfly Conservation (BC) said more than 4,000 recordings had already been submitted by people taking part in its Big Butterfly Count north of the Border.

So far, the Ringlet is Scotland’s most spotted butterfly, with an average of over one record per count, ahead of the Small White and the Meadow Brown.

Dr Zoë Randle, BC’S senior surveys officer, said yesterday that although the count officially ends today that nature lovers continue to be invited to keep submitting butterfly sightings until the end of August.
