Troops in East Germany sealed off the border between East and West Berlin, erecting barbed wire fences up to six feet high to prevent a mass exodus of citizens.

Within days, the makeshift barricade was replaced with a permanent structure, which eventually stretched 66 miles long. The Berlin Wall stood until November 9, 1989, when crowds tore it down brick by brick.
