AUGUST 10, 1793
After more than 200 years as a royal palace, the Musée du Louvre opened to the public for the first time.
Following the French Revolution, the Muséum central des arts de la République was established, with the citizens granted access three days a week. The first collection comprised just 537 paintings and 184 objects of art. Today, the Louvre holds more than 380,000 pieces.
