Nelly rules the roost

-

Nelly Korda claimed gold for USA in the women’s Olympic golf event after yesterday triumphing by one shot at Kasumigaseki Country Club.

The Florida resident compiled a second consecutive round of 69 to add to a stunning second day score of nine-under-par to help her finish top of the leaderboard on 17-under.

While Korda played assuredly on the final day to card a closing two-under, rivals Mone Inami and Lydia Ko were on the charge and a play-off was needed to separate the pair.

Both shot sixunder-par to finish on 16-under and it saw a decider required to settle who claimed silver and bronze at the Tokyo Games.

Only one extra hole was needed after former world No. 1 New Zealand’s Ko hit a bogey on the par five 18th

and it allowed home favourite Inami to put for par to seal silver for Japan.
