1961 FROZEN IN TIME

-

Fans across the country have been delighted with the news that full numbers will be allowed back into stadiums in the coming weeks.

Back in the day, however, sometimes a ground’s capacity was just not enough.

On Thursday, it will be exactly 60 years since 37,000 turned up at Cathkin Park to watch Third Lanark entertain Rangers in a League Cup tie.

But that figure did not include around 10,000 Light Blues fans who tore down fencing and broke into the ground just before kick-off.

That led to chaotic scenes, with the hordes who streamed on to the pitch after the visitors had scored having to be contained by mounted police.

Indeed, at one point the Hi-hi’s manager, Ibrox legend George Young, had to order half-a-dozen punters off the bench in the home dug-out.

Incredibly, there was just one arrest, for breach of the peace.

Rangers won the match 2-0, thanks to a first-half double from winger, Davie Wilson, and went on to lift the trophy by beating Hearts in the Final.
