It’s always wine o’clock somewhere!

We may all feel we have become wine connoisseurs in lockdown – really taking the time to pull out the notes in our favourite bottle of Chardonnay.

Now travel is opening back up, you may even fancy yourself a weekend amongst those who appreciate wine as much as you do – and what better place than the best vineyards on earth to do so?

The drinks experts at online drinks retailer The Bottle Club have taken a list of the top vineyards in the world and ranked them on a variety of different factors to find the best vineyards to visit, depending on your preferences:

So if you do fancy a getaway, here are the top five vineyards to visit in countries on the UK’S amber list for travel:

● Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, Spain

● Antinori nel Chianti Classico, Italy

● Château Smith Haut Lafitte, France

● Delaire Graff Estate, South Africa

● Domäne Wachau, Austria

Best placed for a city break, Champagne Tattinger’s winery is only one-and-a-half miles away by car from Reims, one of France’s biggest cities.

Another famous French vineyard, Chateau Pichon Baron is located only one-and-a-half miles away from Paulliac, in south-western France – which is only a five-minute drive, or a 36-minute walk if you fancy a wander into town.

Australian vineyard company, Penfolds, was founded by Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold and his wife Mary in 1844. The Magill Estate, Penfolds’ first vineyard, is five miles from Adelaide. It hails itself as being one of the world’s few “urban single vineyards”.

If you are looking for a secluded weekend getaway amongst the vines, Weingut Dr Loosen is located 67 miles from Mainz in Germany and has on-site accommodation. Dr Loosen makes a wide range of styles, from botrytis-free dry Rieslings to rich, lush sweet wines.

Overlooking the vineyards and the Moselle river, a double room in Dr Loosen’s guest house will set you back around £120 and is available to book for two nights or more.

Bodega Bouza, based in Uruguay, came top of the bunch for budget. It was the only vineyard offering free tours around its vineyards.
