What’s in bloom?
Gladioli have made a comeback and many gardeners now grow them as cut flowers but there are some kinds, such as the Abyssinian gladiolus (Acidanthera murielae) that fit better into the flower borders. These are elegant plants with spikes of white flowers, each with a maroon blotch in its centre. Grow them in free-draining soil and lift and store the corms at the end of summer.
