Gladioli have made a comeback and many gardeners now grow them as cut flowers but there are some kinds, such as the Abyssinian gladiolus (Acidanther­a murielae) that fit better into the flower borders. These are elegant plants with spikes of white flowers, each with a maroon blotch in its centre. Grow them in free-draining soil and lift and store the corms at the end of summer.
