Jake Davison’s mother Maxine Davison, 51, who was also known as Maxine Chapman, was his first victim, shot dead at point-blank range after he broke into her home in Biddick Drive, in Plymouth’s Keyham area, at 6.11pm on Thursday.

Maxine is understood to have moved from Shetland to the city in the 1990s after the breakdown of her marriage to Davison’s father Mark following his convictions for violence.

A minute after Maxine was shot, Davison claimed his next victims. Lee Martyn, 43, and his three-yearold adopted daughter Sophie were shot as they walked along the street outside his mother’s house. Witnesses said Lee frantically tried to shield his little girl in their last moments.

Tributes have poured in for Toshiba worker Lee who, along with wife Becky, had adopted Sophie around two years ago. Lee had posted a picture on Facebook of the youngster, saying: “We finally adopted Sophie after nearly 15 months. Game changer.”

Victim Stephen Washington, 59, was killed as he walked his two huskies, Storm and Drift, on parkland at about 6.17pm. Storm is understood to have run home on its lead while Drift went missing for a short period.

Kate Shepherd, 66, was gunned down outside a hairdressers in nearby Henderson Place. She was taken to Derriford hospital but sadly could not be saved. Ms Shepherd was described by friends as a talented artist who lived in Kings and, Cornwall, before moving to Plymouth.

Her friend Claire Kidd said: “It has touched all of the hearts of the village. We are all feeling deeply sad and in shock.”
