TV star masters powerboat for role

- Interview: Katie Leung on Annika

TV star Nicola Walker has revealed how she mastered piloting a powerboat during lockdown so she could take on the lead role in a gritty new detective drama set in Scotland.

Walker had to learn the ropes before venturing onto the River Clyde to play DI Annika Strandhed, the head of Glasgow’s marine homicide unit.

She said: “My co-star Jamie Sives and I had to pass our tests otherwise we wouldn’t have been allowed out on the River Clyde behind the steering wheels of these powerful boats.

“We had to know, and show, what to do if someone falls overboard, navigate our way around buoys and many other things.”

The 51-year-old passed with flying colours but then had to spend three months on set away from her family due to filming coinciding with Scotland’s second lockdown.

She added: “Scotland actually went into a second lockdown just as I was travelling up to Glasgow by train to start filming.

“The second lockdown was tougher because I had to stay in Scotland and film completely away from my family.”

Her character will hit the screens this week in Annika, which also stars Katie Leung of Harry Potter fame.
