Prince Charles Edward Stuart raises his standard at Glenfinnan, signalling the start of the Second Jacobite Rebellion.

The uprising enjoys a series of military successes, but defeat at the Battle of Culloden in April of the following year ends the rebellion.

Charles escapes to France, but is unable to win support for another attempt, and dies in Rome in 1788.
