Early Max double settles Jags as they go nap

-

The Jags’ incredible start to the league campaign continued at Victoria Park yesterday as they thumped their local rivals Deveronvale.

It took 14 minutes to open the scoring, former Don Max Barry slamming home a low cross.

He then doubled the lead with another drilled strike.

Sam Morrison headed home an Andy Macaskill free-kick, then Kevin Fraser took the score to 4-0 just before half-time.

As they did last week, Buckie eased off slightly in the second half, but still added a fifth goal, with Kyle Macleod turning home Sam Urquhart’ near-post ball.

BRECHIN 2 ROTHES 2

Brechin grabbed the lead nine minutes before the break when David Cox headed home a Max Kucheriavyi free-kick.

Rothes levelled quarter-of-anhour into the second half when Jack Brown slotted the ball past City keeper Jack Wills.

It was 2-1 to the visitors in the 82nd minute when Ross Gunn squared the ball across the penalty area for the unmarked Aidan Wilson, who fired past Wills.

The visitors were looking to hold on for a deserved victory, with City being reduced to 10 men four minutes later after a reckless challenge by Jamie Bain on Allen Mackenzie. However, their hopes were dashed right at the death when Kucheriavyi fired home a superb free-kick to earn City an unlikely point.

NAIRN COUNTY 2 FRASERBURGH 3

Max Ewan gave the hosts the lead on seven minutes. He cut in from the left and curled a spectacular effort across goal and into the top right-hand corner of the net.

Fraserburgh levelled before half-time, though, when the County defence failed to deal with Jamie Beagrie’s corner from the left on 39 minutes, allowing Bryan Hay to sweep home from close range.

A foul by Ryan Fyffe on Beagrie just before the hour presented Fraserburgh with the chance to go in front from the penalty spot. It was one they took full advantage of as Paul Campbell stroked the ball past Will Counsell in the Nairn goal from 12 yards.

The Broch increased their advantage on 79 minutes. Scott Barbour spun Cohen Ramsay just inside the Nairn box and rammed the ball under Counsell.

Nairn pulled one back late on when Ewan flicked the ball off the shin of back-tracking Fraserburgh full-back Owen Cairns, with the ball then trickling past Leask.

But Fraserburgh saw out the closing stages for the win.

FORT WILLIAM 2 FORRES MECHANICS 3

Fort William took a shock lead after five minutes when Ruaridh Macdonald struck Brandon Scott’s cross past Stuart Knight.

Just three minutes later, Moray Taylor flicked home an Owen Paterson corner to level, then Ross Macpherson gave the Can Cans the advantage when he headed home from another corner.

Taylor created space to set up Allan Macphee to give the Mechanics some breathing space early in the second half.

It proved to be required as, late on, Taylor was robbed of possession and Connor Moore drove forward to net.

BRORA RANGERS 0 FORMARTINE UNITED 3

Scott Lisle wasted no time in putting the visitors in front and, when Jonathan Smith added a second halfway through the first half, the writing was on the wall.

Former Cove striker Smith completed the scoring after the break with a well-taken spot-kick, leaving the title holders down in 13th position.

LOSSIEMOUTH 2 WICK 1

Anyone who has followed either of these two teams this term would have known not to leave the ground early.

True to form, the destination of the points was left until the last minute and it was the longserving Liam Archibald who was to be the hero, netting the winner for the Coasters.

Lossie had went into the break in front thanks to Brodie Allen’s composed finish from 12 yards, but, five minutes after the turnaround, Gordon Macnab added another to his tally to set the stage for the dramatic finale.

TURRIFF 0 HUNTLY 4

A well-worked free-kick saw Angus Grant play the ball to the side of the Turriff wall, leaving Buckie loanee Marcus Goodall to tap home the opening goal.

Logan Johnstone crossed for Gavin Elphinstone to head downwards into the net for a second the settle Huntly.

A Greg Buchan free-kick fell back to Goodall, who found the net through a forest of legs, before he completed his hat-trick from the penalty spot after he was tripped by the beleaguered home defence.

KEITH 0 INVERURIE 0

After losing 10-0 to Buckie last week, the Maroons caretaker management team of Muggsy Brown, Steve Rattray and Dod Simmers were able to coax a response out of their players, who deserved the reward of a point.

Locos were dominant, but found Keith keeper Craig Reid in good form on the few occasions they broke through.

His highlight was a diving save low to his right to keep out a late Neil Gauld penalty, while, at the other end, Nathan Mckeown twice stung the palms of the Locos stopper.
