Greta the Great is bang on trend
It’s very hard not to like Greta Thunberg, isn’t it? The eco warrior is so feisty, so strong and so smart – she is only 18 and yet has achieved more in her short lifetime than many do in 50 or even 60 years!
Adding to her ever-expanding list of accolades, the teenager appears on the inaugural cover of Vogue Scandinavia this month and, in her interview, she quite surprisingly takes a swipe at the fashion industry.
Stating that so-called ethical fast fashion is “pure greenwashing”, Greta admitted: “The last time I bought something new was three years ago and it was secondhand. I just borrow things from people I know.” As always, she is wise beyond her years.
It’s easy to think our obsession with cheap dresses, trousers and tops is harmless but, with couture brands like Burberry allegedly burning old stock rather than have it be reused or recycled (yes, really!), there is a far darker side to our passion for fashion.
Although there’s no quick or easy fix for such a worldwide issue, we can all do our bit to shop more sustainably.
For example, during lockdown, I cleared out my own wardrobe and donated unwanted garments to a local Glasgow charity that supports women. And, let’s not forget your granny’s advice to spend a little more on good quality that lasts and will never go out of style.
