Banknotes fetch £6.5k

-

A rare set of Jacobite banknotes printed from an original copper plate ordered by Bonnie Prince Charlie before the Battle of Culloden has fetched £6,500 at auction.

The engraving plate was commissioned by Charles Edward Stuart, known as the Young Pretender, in 1746 to produce money to fund his armies.

Before the money could be printed, the Jacobites suffered crushing defeat in the battle near Inverness.

The auction raised cash for West Highland Museum.
