Billy Crudup, Jason Lee, John Fedevich and Mark Kozelek rehearsed four hours a night, five nights a week, for six weeks to become fictional rock band Stillwater. Director Cameron Crowe based the movie on his experiences as a young music writer on tour with the Allman Brothers who, curiously, shared a record label with a little-known, real-life band called Stillwater. Kate Hudson was Oscar-nominated for her turn as Penny Lane.
