1969 FROZEN IN TIME

-

In his prime, many a German punter was grateful to Gerd Muller.

Put your mortgage on him to score and, more often than not, Der Bomber delivered.

The Bayern Munich striker hit the net 365 times in 427 Bundesliga outings, 66 times in 74 European ties, and he scored 68 goals while winning 62 caps for West Germany.

Needless to say, a couple of those came against Scotland.

The diminutive hitman was on the mark when Bobby Brown’s side drew a World Cup qualifier 1-1 at Hampden in April 1969 in front of 95,591, a match remembered more for Bobby Murdoch’s stunning equaliser.

And Muller did it again when the sides met in Hamburg six months later, putting the Germans 2-1 ahead in a match they would eventually win 3-2 to qualify for the Finals in Mexico the following year, where they finished third and Muller bagged another 10 to add to his tally.

Muller was in the Bayern side which beat Rangers in the 1967 ECWC Final and won the European Cup three times.

?? ?? Not this time. Gerd Muller evades Ronnie Mackinnon to beat Tommy Lawrence in the Scotland goal at Hampden in April 1969. But on this occasion, his effort was disallowed for offside.
