Garden of the week
The garden at Edzell Castle dates back to 1604 and it is a simple, high-walled courtyard with a parterre filled with bedding plants and roses in the centre. What makes it interesting are the carvings around the walls, which include heraldic designs and panels carved with astrological symbols that are unique in the UK. Niches alongside these, filled with blue and white lobelia, create a chequerboard pattern. To get the best view climb what remains of the ruined castle and look down on the garden below.
